It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our member Udo Stundner on August 20, 2013

Udo first joined the rotary club of Montreal in 1982 leaving the Club in 1989 when he was transferred to Toronto. He rejoined our Club in 1993 after moving back to Montreal. He was a very active member serving on a number of committees and in various capacities most important of which were his terms as president and past president.

My personal involvement with Udo was serving on our grants committee which responded to the numerous requests for financial support from community organizations and individuals in need and on our fund raising golf committee. As a result of his involvement on these two committees he became involved with la rue des femmes a support group for homeless women and a supporter of Elizabeth house a support group for young unwed mothers . Both organizations benefited from Udo’s council.

Udo was highly respected by the members of our club and in particular for his judgement. When we recently received a significant bequest from the estate of a member we turned to Udo for financial guidance. One of our older members Drew Webster “ mentioned that when it came to judgment Udo got top marks and i can’t think of a person whose council I would implicitly trust more. Udo exemplified Rotary’s four way test: is it the truth, is it fair to all concerned,  will it build good will and friendship,  will it be beneficial to all.

This is the legacy he leaves us truth fairness and goodwill.

At the club meeting on July 12 2013, it was decided that the club takes two prong approach to the support of the victims of the Lac Megantic disaster:

·         Immediate – short term support

·         Following by a long term support initiative.

In terms of the short term funding the motion was carried to through or support behind the current  Salvation Army initiative in Lac Megantic. A sum of $1,000.00  was allocated to this effect.

As for the long term approach we want to try to structure our contribution is such a way as to be eligible for an RI matching fund which will effectively double the moneys we raise for that purpose. This (somewhat complicated) structure will take time and we have already taken steps to put it together. We will follow up with regular reports on the follow up of this initiative.

Making a difference is not only support - but also participation. Rotary of Montreal member Mr. Mikkel Elsborg participated and was sponsored for the ride from Montreal to Quebec City (250 km) by bike which he rode with fellow Rotarian from Lakeshore Mr. Jesper Jonsson.
